Writing Chapters for a New Book about Stand-Up!

Wow, how strange and lovely to see my name in a book! What a dream come true. Thanks to everyone that let me annoy them with all of my my thoughts on stand-up comedy over the last decade.

I was the first author of a chapter on Maria Bamford, entitled An Incongruous Blend of Tragedy and Comedy: How Maria Bamford Lightens the Dark Side of Mental Illness, and I was the second author for a chapter on comedy and #metoo, entitled, Comedy in the Era of #MeToo: Masking and Unmasking Sexual Misconduct in Stand-Up Comedy. I know, they’re both real mouthfuls. That’s academia for you.

I was asked to help with this project a few years ago, so it’s been such a treat to watch the book grow and take shape, and become something you can hold in your hand! The two editors, Patrice and Eric, are two professors that I met a few summers back at the International Society of Humor Studies Conference in Montreal. I was a grad school at the time, and lucky enough to have been given a grant to go and speak. You can read my talk from that conference here.
